Dynamics of osseointegration in various human and animal models - a comparative analysis.
Botticelli D1,2, Lang NP3,4.

Prof Niklaus Lang and dr Daniele Botticelli have analysed 8 studies on the early phases of osseointegration on human and animal models examining new bone apposition and parent bone resorption in contact with the implant surfaces.

The authors have deduced the “Intersection point”, a new statistical instrument indicating the precise time when the percentage of new bone overtakes the quantity of parent bone. This instrument may become useful in the future to analyse further publications and get additional elements to study the efficacy of early osseointegration, a topical subject in dentistry.
As a result of this analysis the authors have met the conclusions of the Consensus Conference held in EAO 2009, that moderately rough surfaces, such as the ZirTi surface of Sweden & Martina implants, are the gold standard for osseointegration.
